The Ups and Downs of being unemployed

Life is a story and it depends on the person on how she/he will write it.

And this is how I will write my current status… being unemployed.

Many of us know that at the age of 30, a person should be stable to his/her career, financially, personally, and earned their first million. Being unemployed is certainly not on the list. But what can I say, I’m not one of those lucky people who already achieved their 30-year-old goals because for the 5th time, I am unemployed. It’s not always my fault… except for the first two jobs I had.

Anyway, during application interviews, interviewers usually asks you “what’s keeping you busy aside from looking for a job?” something like that. I confidently answered this by saying “I’m busy browsing the internet and newspaper ads looking for all the job openings, and writing stories.”. I said this because I want them to think that I’m persistent and not wasting my time for non-sense activities.

After few interviews and no call backs, there I realized that I just killed my own chance of getting hired to the companies I applied to. Maybe they’re thinking I’m not doing anything for myself to grow and learn new skills; that I’m depending my skill development on my next job. So, while I hunt for a new job, I decided to develop new skills.

My first skill to learn is drawing. I chose this because this could help me in building my portfolio and land a graphic designer job. I consulted my sister because she’s into drawing and painting, and she’s very good at it. I thought it’s a talent she got from our family. But I’m surprise when she told me that it’s not a talent, it just a skill she practiced for years. She even told me that I, too, can draw beautiful masterpiece if I will just practice it. And that’s what I did, I draw. You might remember Cinderella, I posted it in here with no lips. I’m having hard time to draw her lips. But now, I decided to finish it. Of course, I failed. She still has no lips up to now. **If someone knows how to draw lips, please give me some tips. I will appreciate it a lot.**

Cinderella drawing

This is Cinderella with no lips until now 😦

After few months of drawing, I realized… drawing isn’t my thing.  Every time I finished a drawing, I looked at it and feel nothing. So, I try coloring. My sisters are very supportive of me and bought me different coloring books. And for some reason, I’m excited and happy. And I can’t stop staring at it every time I finished coloring it. I guess, this is my thing. Now, every time I’m in the bookstore, I stopped at the school supplies section and looking for different kinds of coloring materials. Also, to the kid’s book section where all the coloring books are in there. I almost cried, honestly, when I saw a Big Hero 6 coloring book. It’s like a graphic novel and you’re the one to color it. Isn’t that amazing?! I always wanted to have my own graphic novel, so, this coloring book gives me an idea to make it like this.

My coloring collection 🙂

Because of this, I decide to try painting as well. I never started because I’m still addicted in coloring all the coloring books my sisters and I bought. But after this, I’m sure I will start painting and maybe visit some museums for some inspirations. Or go to the art studio named ‘Sip and Gogh’. My sisters went there and I heard a lot of good things.

To sum up, the downside of being unemployed at the age of 30 are: financially unstable, some people might think of you as a failure; that you can’t keep a job because there is something wrong with you, and lastly, loneliness. But despite of these, being unemployed is not the end-of-the-world kind of thing… it’s an opportunity to do something you enjoy and love. I think that’s the silver lining of being unemployed.

I hope I inspire some people today! If not, go out there and find  your own inspiration.

2 year Anniversary

Another blogging achievement: 2 years of blogging

2nd year anniversaryIt’s my second anniversary as a blogger. Yay! I admit, I never thought that I could pull this up for this long.

Blogging wasn’t on my list of things that I wanted to have. For me a blog is like having a relationship, it requires a lot of attention and maintenance just to make the relationship work smoothly.

And 2 years after, I still think that way. I feel guilty whenever I haven’t find the time to post anything, like for a month or more. Or worst, I didn’t open my account at all.

So to lessen my guilt, I opened my blog at work and pinned it on my Internet browser. This way I can visit it, read some from the freshly pressed, and hopefully can write something when inspiration hits me.

Anyhow, congratulations to me! I hope soon I can write a story again. So all my visitors will have something to look forward to when they visit my blog.

Killing 101 – Random Ideas

Did you ever had a feeling that you want to kill the person sitting next to you?

This is a scary question actually. But for some, they really considering this option. Maybe because their seatmates are way too annoying.

But this is a challenging job as you’re both in public. One must do it very smoothly so you will not get any attention. Also, you have limited resources that can be used in killing.

It’s so hard that I don’t know how to start it. But when I looked at my seatmate, in just a snap, I’m so inspired.

So let the planning begins. I’ll just come out with different scenario. And just pick what do you think is possible, and/or just a mere work of imagination.

*Of course, I’ll use my template on this:

WHO: A woman seatmate named Ali.

WHERE: Office

REASONS: Already explained on each story

SCENARIO 1: Stairs – Stairs are very common in public places. This is one clean resources you can use. Also, no one will ever questioned you.

It’s 4:30 in the morning. Time out is supposed to be 5 am but Ali already packed her bag and ready to go home. This becomes her habit everyday that’s why Ri, her seatmate, hates her.

Ri thought ‘Why she always wanted to be the first person to swiped her ID off to the scanner and rushed to the elevator? The worst part is, once she enters she will immediately close it. She wanted to be alone in the elevator all the time. WTF!’

But today she’ll end it.

Ali does the same, as usual. But to her surprised, Ri is already on the hallway waiting for the elevator to come up. Ri approached her and said “The elevator is all out. Try the service elevator”

Ali nodded and followed Ri’s advice.

When she opens up the door, she immediately noticed Captain America (that’s her code name for her crush)

She smiled shyly and stand next to him while waiting for the elevator to open.

Ali thought ‘This is my chance’. She gathered all her confidence to start a conversation. But before she could able to say anything, Ri opened the door and pushed her down the stairs.

SCENARIO 2: Electrocution

*I’m still using the same characters.

Ali have this habit to wear her headphones all the time during her shift. And when you tried to talk to her, she’ll sing out loud on your ears until you decide to walk away.

Ri is so pissed. She escalated the problem to their Manager. But Ali is a top performer of their team, so the judgment of the Manager is quite bias.

But Ri already run out of patience. She finally decided to put an end of Ali’s annoying habit.

The next day, Ri come to the office very early. So early that even the janitorial team is still not there to clean the place.

She went straight to her station and unpacked her bag. She pulled out a wire cutter first then grabbed Ali’s headset.

Upon finishing Ali’s headset, she placed it back and stared at it for a moment. She’s nervous and a bit guilty because she knows that her plan can kill Ali. But when she remembers all the annoying things Ali does and for sure, she’ll keep on doing; that feeling of guilt fades away.

And the moment has come. Ali came in, smiled at Ri for a moment then went straight at her seat. Her computer boot up, enter her password, and set up everything from work-related documents to the music channel.

And then grabs her headset and place it firmly on her ears.

“Ouch” Ali said very irritated.

Ri thought that Ali already noticed the open wire she hid on Ali’s ear piece. But she felt relief when Ali just shrugged her shoulder.

And once she hit the ‘play’ button, she got electrocuted.

Monday madness.

That’s how everyone often described Monday. But for Ri, it’s only an ordinary day to spend in the office. But she think otherwise as her office crush ‘Ray-Ray’ walked in front of her. He wears a violet long sleeve, black pants and shoes, and don’t forget his gorgeous stare.

Oh that stare… Whenever Ri caught a glimpse of his gorgeous stare, she wanted to harassed him (sexually of course *wink)

But her fantasies got ruined when Ali came in. She wear a dress that has the same color as Ray-Ray. And the worst part, Ray-Ray gave her a compliment.

With Ri’s madness, she imagine beating Ali with her mug to death.

But of course, she can’t do that… in public.

Ali approached her and told her everything they talked about. And the imagination continues on Ri’s head. She’s so annoying that Ri wishes to have a bomb on her hand and put it in her mouth and …. BOOM! She’s gone.

But of course that’s impossible to happen because there’s no available bomb at the office. So she just bear the pain – from her ears to her heart.

It’s 5 in the morning. Ri’s excitement starts to arise because she could finally go home and be away from Ali. But Ali asked her a favor and she can’t refused.

So she went with her at the ATM. But Ri decides at the last minute to stay at the grocery nearby to buy some snacks, and just wait her from there. They both agreed and went to different direction.

Ri is on the cashier paying for her food when she heard an explosion. She ran outside and saw the ATM where Ali is, exploded.

She stared at it just like anybody. But if you could only read her thoughts, you’ll know she says “Thank you!”

Killing 101 – How to kill characters through accidents

In my opinion, killing your characters through accidents are the lamest way. Well, where’s the excitement of the story if the villain just die on a single gunshot (yes, this can be an accident), car accident, or falling from the 32nd floor of the building?

But it doesn’t mean that you can’t use these ways. You still can, just be creative like I do. I have a clever idea of combining all accidents at once. It may not be something new. But I love it. And I even created my own two-steps process for me to be guided: *SIDE NOTE: This is purely my opinion. If you have yours, please share it.

Also, always remember that you’re killing characters to add excitement to your story. If you can’t deliver it, what’s the sense of writing it right? And you have to do it with passion! For readers to believe that it’s really happening.

FIRST STEP: Find the right reason.

I always ask myself this question: “Why do I want to kill this character in the first place?”

If I know the reason, I’ll have the idea on the best way of killing that character.

For me, killing a character is more like planning my own wedding. I need to plan it as perfect as it can be. I need to find the right venue, character to kill, line ups of events, and proper timing.

Completing all these will give me the assurance that I will be having a happily-ever-after kind of ending (in a writer’s satisfaction, of course).

I wrote a short story that can be a good example:

———————SHORT STORY———————

Howard is so happy that his divorce went great. He’s going to call Laida to reveal the good news but he thought of something better. That’s why when he calls her, he just say “Pack your bag baby, we are going for a little trip.”

Laida asked why but he just replied “Later, you’ll know.” then hang up.

She just shrugged her shoulder and goes on with the packing. She pack all her lingerie because she knows Howard too well. If he said for a little trip it only means a lot of sex. Just the thought of it makes her excited.

It’s 4 in the afternoon when Howard came to pick her up on her small apartment. She dress so beautifully, in Howard’s mind. But others would rather see it as, the kind of clothing only a whore can wear.

“You look lovely, my dear” he whispered.

“I know” then kissed so sweet.

After a long tongue action, they then decided to go inside the car and start their long road trip.

Inside the car, Howard gave Laida the map to show her where they are going. She excitedly jump into joy when she finds out that they are going to Howard’s ex-wife lake house. She can’t believe it and asks on how he convince her wife to go in there without her.

“Ex-wife” he corrected.

She giggles more as she heard it.

“You made my day, darling! And later, I’ll show you how I appreciated all this.” she said with a very seductive voice.

Then they looked at each other as if tomorrow will never come.

They reached the railroad crossing and stopped as the train’s gate is closing. They waited patiently. But suddenly Howard notice a little boy is about to cross the train tracks. The train is approaching so fast, he will get hit if he didn’t run to safety. He’s so scared and without thinking twice, he opens his door and run to get the boy.

Laida is confused looking at him. She opened the door and shouted “Where are you going?”

“I need to save the boy”

“Let him die there” she replied. But Howard didn’t heard any of it. Laida walks through the train’s gate, feeling annoyed.

“He left me to save a little boy, whew!” she thought.

When the train is approaching near her, she walks away. But she can’t as her dress’ belt has been caught up on the pole. She’s not too eager to remove it at first because she knew the train couldn’t hit her. But when she heard a loud beep signaling the gate to lift up. Blood starts to rush into her head.

She try to remove the belt as fast as she can. But in her stress she can’t remove the belt from her waist. That’s why she decided to remove it by sliding her body down. But before she can slid her head from the belt, the gate lifted and so she is. The belt is surrounded to her neck. She hardly could breathe. But she’s not giving up. She pulled the belt away from her neck for her to breathe.

Howard saw her and stunned for a moment.

“What are y- loo–king at? He-p me!” she manage to say while trying to save her own life.

Howard look for someone to help him. But the road is empty which is kind of weird for a time like this.

She heard another train signal and get a little relief as she know the gate will go down. But the train is approaching so fast but the gate is not going down. She’s so scared. And with a matter of seconds, bright light filled her eyes.

The train hit her that makes her body swing and rolls on the side body of the train like an action star in a movie. Because of the huge amount of force, it cut the belt from the gate. Her body flew up in the air and landed to the nearby Skyway.

She can’t feel her body. She lay on the ground lifeless, waiting. Waiting for someone to save her.

‘I’m going to get through this’ she repeatedly saying this on her mind to keep her awake.

Hope arises as she’s having a glimpse of light. ‘Oh please, let it be Howard’ she prayed. But she lost that hope when she felt the vibration on the ground getting heavier as the car is approaching. And in one flash of light. Three sport cars are racing to one another, beating all the red lights, and playing catch-me-if-you-can to the police.

Howard finally came in to the scene accompanied by police officers and ambulance. His knee fell down on the ground as he saw the beaten body of her girlfriend. The police is about to pick up the body when a huge cargo truck came rushing on the road and hit Laida.

The police raised a STOP sign to all the incoming vehicle just to pick up the remaining parts of the victim.

———————END OF SHORT STORY———————

REASON: My character is a self-centered woman who love to steal someone else’s husband.

WHERE: Open road

Characters: Laida, the husband stealer; and Howard, the husband

Sequence of death: Hang, got hit by a train, body flew up in the air and dropped on the ground, and got hit again by several vehicle.

You may think it’s overkill. But for me, it’s reasonable. I killed my character based on their personality. If my characters are wild and aggressive, I give them more pain because that’s what they do to others.

For others, they may think of this as a joke or nonsensical kind of article. But I always have this in mind, “I am the writer of my own story. I can do everything I wanted and how I wanted it to be done. Everything is possible as long as I place it on its rightful category – Fiction, non-fiction, and so on.” It’s a good mantra as well.

Anyhow. This is how I kill my characters. How about you?

Piece of Advice: Don’t let others unfair criticism affects you. They just simply don’t have the kind of creativity that you have.
